Rockin' Rollin' Doo-Wop 6: Du-Bi-A-Bo

Hey folks, it's been a looooong time! About a month or two back, I heard a couple of excellent tracks - The Jaguars' The City Zoo (Baby, Baby, Baby), and The Electras' Little Girl of Mine. And that's the scoop - the incentive to roll out another mix. 18 tracks in all, a mix of 50s & 60s. Although the series leans more to the rockin' side of doo-wop/early R&B, the last few tracks are ballads. Oh well, it's all good.

Along with my obvious two top favorites aforementioned, other favs include The Concords' Satisfied with Rock 'n Roll, The King Bees' Puppy Love, and The Dukes' Groceries, Sir. Enjoy!

It's the '50s! Gimmie Some!

All '50s R&B, doo-wop, etc. Big favs in The Sparks of Rhythm's "Woman, Woman, Woman" from '55, and The Harptones' "Gimmie Some" from '56. Other favs? The Empires' "Don't Touch My Gal ('56)," Bobby Day's "Little Turtle Dove ('58)," Linda Hayes' "Hubba Hubba ('59)" and Sherman and The Darts' "Remember (It's Only You and I)" from '58, to name a few. 20 tracks in all, probably rare to the casual listener. Smokin' Oldies Jukebox! The Early Kickapoo '60s

Note: I normally borrow part of a song title (or two) from the mix to make part of the complete title. I select words for either phonetic reasons, or definition/relative, etc, etc, and in this case, I thought "Kickapoo" (from the track "Kickapoo Joy Juice" by The Rivingtons) was either colloquial or gobbledygook (remember, and in my defense, The Rivingtons also released Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow, The Bird's the Word, etc) and it simply rolled off the tongue. It didn't dawn on me until this morning that maybe there's a meaning behind the word, and sure enough, Kickapoo are North American people formerly living in Wisconsin, and now in Kansas, Oklahoma, and north central Mexico. Therefore, the subtitle has nothing to do with the actual Kickapoo, nor any of the tracks are centered on the areas aforementioned. With that out of the way...

20 smokin' oldies for the jukebox, all from '60 to '63. Several unsung gems including Wynonie Harris' "Sweet Lucy Brown," Little Jerry Williams' "You Call It Love," Little Richard's "I'm in Love Again" and Eddie Bo's "Baby I'm Wise." Also some doo-wop including The Flamingos' "Mio Amore" (sounds a bit similar to their awesome "I Only Have Eyes for You") and Shep & The Limelites' "Who Told the Sandman." And a popcorn track or two. As usual, only the good stuff. 16 tracks, from '51 to '61 including big fav "Rockin' in the Rocket Room" by The Larks. Also, The Moonlighters' "Going Out," The Lyrics' "Come on Home," The Five Keys' "Hucklebuck with Jimmy," The Lamplighters' "Goody Good Things" and The Four Buddies' "Ooh-Ow" to name a few. Enjoy!

Doo-Wop Ballads 4: Lucky Star

Oh yeah, more goodies, 20 of 'em. Lots of rare tracks for the casual listener. The Sonics' "This Broken Heart" is my big fav here. It's a goodie for sure. Many other goodies including The Four Fellows' "You Don't Know Me," The Edsels' "Count the Tears," The Romeos' "Love Me," The Casanovas' "Please Be Mine," Ace Kennedy & The Candies' "Arms Around You," etc. They're all good. Doo-Wop Ballads 2: Love Is True [1951-62]

20 tracks including The Crickets' (not Buddy's old band) "You're Mine," Miriam Grate and The Dovers' "My Angel," Dimples' "My Sister's Beau," The Five Stars' "We Danced in the Moonlight" and The Four Fellows' "Soldier Boy." Enjoy!

20 rare rockin' doo-wop tracks from 1953 to 64. Great tracks including The Du Mauriers' "All Night Long" (probably my top fav of the mix), The Cadets' "Do You Wanna Rock" and The Penguins' "Ookey Ook." More goodies in The Quills' "Going to the Moon," The Crescendos' "Ding a Ling," The Magic-Tones' "Good Googa Mooga" and The Cadillacs' "Zoom-Boom-Zing." This mix is soooo good, a number five may just be in the works. Enjoy!

Rockin' Rollin' Doo-Wop 3: Tick ​​Tock A-Woo!

Back in the first volume (here), I mentioned "Zoom" by The Starlighters but didn't have a good quality mp3. The tune has to be one of the heaviest, and rockiest doo-wop track I've ever heard. I eventually found one and forgot all about it until Chi-Town sent me the track. I decided to use his track for this mix. A big thanks!

My biggest fav is a toss-up between "Zoom" and George Zimmerman and The Thrills' "Ain't Got the Money to Pay for This Drink." Other favs include The Genies' "Who's That Knocking," The Isley Brothers' "Everybody's Gonna Rock and Roll" and The Hollyhocks' "You for Me." Also, Dave Collins & The Scrubs' "Bluesy Me" and Grady Chapman and The Suedes' "Don't Blooper." 20 tracks in all. They're all good. Enjoy!

If one rockin' & rollin' doo-wop'n ain't enough, how about another round. 18 tracks in all, from 1954 to '64. Favs include The Cliques' "I'm in Love with a Girl" (biggest fav in the mix, probably). The Blue Chips' "Come Back" and The Dikes' "Light Me Up" are a couple more big favs. They're all good of course. When I first heard "Zoom" by The Starlighters years ago, I thought it was one of the most hard-rockin' doo-wop tunes ever released. Could there be more out there? Let's see...
